• Who was your primary influence and why?
Harold Von Schmidt because, as a very young artist, I wanted to be an illustrator in his style, doing westerns, sea stories, and animal illustrations. There is no one better at building a picture structure.
• What is your favorite color to paint?
Red!
• What is your favorite piece of art and why?
Henri Toulouse-Lautrec’s At the Circus Fernando. The drawing, the composition, and the color have everything, plus a fabulous rendering of a horse.
Roy Andersen has been a professional illustrator for more than 30 years. His work has been featured on many covers of Time; on award-winning U.S. postage stamps, including the commemorative stamps of both American horses and American dogs; in the pages of National Geographic; and in other publications. The National Park Service and Royal Saudi Arabian Naval Headquarters have commissioned his work. His work has been at the E.E. Fogelson Visitor Center at Pecos National Historic Park in New Mexico, and at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. In 1998, he won the Norris Foundation People’s Choice Award at the Autry National Center’s Masters of the American West. He participates annually in Prix de West. He and his wife, Lui, reside in Kerrville, Texas, where they raise American paint horses.
