Ed Czarnezki was a wildlife painter, taxidermist, and naturalist who lived within walking distance from my home when I was growing up in Wisconsin. I spent many hours watching him in his studio. • What is your favorite patina and why? My favorite patina is the brown, marble-like patina that my wife and I put on most of my bronzes. It resembles the Petoskey fossil stone found in northern Michigan. I developed the patina and my wife perfected it. • What is your favorite piece of art and why? My favorite piece of art, far and away, is the marble Ugolino and His Sons by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Whenever I am in New York, I visit this sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Gerald Balciar’s art is noted for its readily identifiable style, which is grounded in an in-depth knowledge of animals. For reference, he works from his extensive library of wildlife photos, magazine clippings, books, and numerous study casts and measurements. He uses live models as an invaluable aid in his sculptures, and he receives excellent cooperation from zoologists and wildlife organizations. He is involved in the creative process of bronze making from beginning to end. He works the sculpture in wax or clay, then personally makes his own molds and chases his own waxes. While doing an 18-foot bronze elk in 1982, he devised a point-up system that revolutionized the traditional enlargement process. He resides with his wife, Bonnie, in Parker, Colorado.
